parking woes
I can't help but notice the long line of vehicles along the road leading to places of worship. In religious tolerant Singapore the law turns a blind eye to the faithful who park their vehicles along the road for fear of upsetting the 'fragile' peace and harmony. This phenomenon is especially apparent on Fridays at mosque all around Singapore. You know when you are in close proximity to a mosque not by the sound of the prayers through the speakers but by the long line of cars on the roads leading up to the mosque. This occurence does not confine itself to our Muslim friends. This selfish behavior is also shown at churches and temples around the island.
We read in the news how parishoners of a certain church in the east coast area block the front gates of residents in the area every Sunday. Certain times of the year temples are flooded with the faithful who go and participate in prayers and make their dutiful offerings to their ancestors.
Most of the time the relevant authorities try to keep the peace and not issue summonses, but the reality is that there is no simple solution to this problem. It is not financially feasible for all these places of worship to build multi-storey car parks for their worshippers. And these 'car parks' will be under-utilised the rest of the time when no worship sessions are on.
