What i did today
I went to Labrador Park today. I had planned to catch the sunset as it had been good the last couple of days.So I made the long drive down...
The day was rather cloudy and gloomy so once again I missed out on my sunset. But Labrador Park still has lots to offer beside a beautiful sunset.
It is full of history as can be seen by all the forts and gun emplacements you will find along the trail in the woods. It also boast an amazing range of flora and fauna for a park a mere 16.5 ha.Of special interest is the monocotyledonous tree, Dracaena maingayi, estimated to be more than 80 years old.
Firstly there's the mangrove area near the bridge. It is teeming with marine life. You may find if you walk at low tide, crustaceans, corals and other such marine wildlife. As such Labrador Park is considered a protected area.
Labrador Park also boasts of a wide range of fauna and animals ,especially birds.
Also worth exploring is the aerial staircase which leads up Pasir Panjang Hill. From up there you get a panoramic view of the shore and the park. In the distance you see the southern islands and lying below is the T-shaped bridge. At night the view is brilliant as well. It seems like a thousand candles alight. The aerial bridge is also good if you wanna view the sunset and relax.
Within the park proper are trails where one can view World War 2 relics and tunnels.
At one end of the park (directly opposite Sentosa) there is a red lighthouse which guides ships passing through the straits.
It is believed that tunnels from Labrador Park lead to Fort Siloso. This supposedly facillitated the transportation of ammunition and weaponry across to the Fort.Although not proven, there has been evidence to say that it may be more than just hearsay...
After Labrador Park I took a short drive to Kent Ridge Park.
One of the last battles for Singapore was fought on this hill which dominated the harbour and the British military depots in the Ayer Rajah area. A plaque was installed at the upper carpark in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II. Today the hill bears a museum in memory of this heroic defense battle, aptly called Reflections at Bukit Chandu.
As part of the Army's adoption of the park as The Army Green Park, two decommissioned M114 Artillery Guns and an AMX-13 Light Tank are displayed in the park to provide points of interest.
Kent Ridge Park also boasts of the largest fitness station of any park in Singapore(Army Green Park mah)and a treetop walk which leads you down the hill to Reflections at Bukit Chandu.
Avid birdwatchers may also birdwatch here much like a Labrador Park.
