Israel beat Russia 2-1, Macedonia beat Croatia 2-0

With the above results England only has to draw at their final game with Croatia to go through. Not that surprising that Israel got the win, but curious about the capitulation of Russia in such a game. Guus Hiddink's is one of the better coaches around. And after masterminding the qualification campaingn of Russia so astutely, this match seemed a mere formality.After all the pre-match talk it seemed that Russia would walk all over Israel, but somehow at crunch time Russia seemed to have lost the script.
Even more amazing was the capitulation of Croatia at the hands of Macedonia. Macedonia are not quite a world power at this level, but to beat Croatia 2-0 is a real feather in their cap. But despite the bad result Croatia still go through to Euro 08.


Italy beat Scotland 2-1

With this result the Tartan Army's hope of making their first major international competition have been crushed. What a cruel way to go out to have to concede an injury time goal that put paid to all Scotland's good work leading up to this match. Even a draw would have been enough.

Northern Ireland down Denmark 2-1

With this result,N.Ireland have a mathematical chance to advance. In the process David Healy notched up his 13th goal of the campaign, a new record.

Netherlands beat Luxembourg 1-0

And advance to the finals.

Spain 3-0 Sweden
and are now assured of a place in the finals.

Wales 2 Republic of Ireland 2
The result put paid to the Republic's hopes of advancing.
