A Class Divided

Jane Elliott, internationally known teacher, lecturer and diversity trainer exposes prejudice and bigotry for what it is, an irrational class system based upon purely arbitrary factors. In response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. over thirty years ago, Jane Elliott gave her third-grade students a first-hand experience in the meaning of discrimination, through the controversial and startling "Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes". This is the story of what she taught the children, and the impact that lesson had on their lives.

5 videos that vividly illustrate discrimination in this class social experiment and the ill-effects on ones self-esteem and behavior

the Dishwasher

The Dishwasher
By Cris Perez-Nole,
She Speaks Graduate

Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson they shall be like wool.” (NIV)Devotion:

My husband and I just couldn’t do it; it went against everything we had done over the last ten years. It just seemed like we were asking for a bigger mess than what we started out with.
We were standing together in the kitchen staring at our brand new fully loaded 2007 GE dishwasher. We must have looked like two little kids on Christmas morning, opening much anticipated gifts. We had finally broken down and replaced the one that had been sitting there for years. We had never used the dishwasher the way it had been intended to be used. Instead of using it to clean our dirty dishes, we hand washed the dishes and then just put them in the dishwasher to air dry. After years of doing this, the dishwasher was finally overtaken by mold and mildew, becoming an eye-sore and health hazard.
This morning we ran our new dishwasher and were amazed at the results. As I took out the first dish, it was pure white; no food stained the plates, no water marks on the glasses. As I stood shocked with dish in hand, I could hear the Lord speaking straight to my heart saying, “I do for your soul what the dishwasher does for the dishes.”
I can’t believe that for all these years there had actually been an easier way. A habit formed over a lifetime had kept me from looking for an easier way out.
I couldn’t help but think about my relationship with the Lord and how similar my own belief system toward Him was like that of the dirty dishes. How many times had I tried to clean myself up before I came to Him? So many times I thought I had to get rid of the sin in my life, the struggle in my mind, or the habit that held me down. I had this false belief that Jesus wouldn’t have anything to do with me until I was completely clean.
I spent years trying to clean the uncleanable, just like I’d spent years washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. How crazy was that! You are probably wondering why we would do such a thing. The only answer we could come up with was this: we’ve always done them that way. Out of habit we did what the dishwasher was meant to do.
In my relationship with the Lord, I tried to do what only Jesus could do: cleanse my soul. Jesus is the only one who can clean the uncleanable. As I religiously and legalistically performed in my everyday life, the mold of pride took form and almost took me out. I started believing that I could clean the inside of my cup on my own. However, the Holy Spirit gently but firmly reminded me there was nothing I could do to take the sin away.
That’s what the cross is all about. Just like I was amazed at what the dishwasher did to my dirty, filthy, greasy dishes, so am I amazed even more at what Jesus has done with my broken, sinful, prideful heart.

Dear Lord, Please remind me that you are not looking for perfection, just a willing heart. Help me come to you just as I am, flaws and all. Thank you for making me as white as snow and taking all my sins away, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) by Jay Chou

Something I know Agnes will enjoy:

a brief update

  • Yesterday met up with Agnes for dinner. Did not go to church because of the IT fair at SUNTEC. It turned out to be a wise decision in the end, as it was even more packed on Sunday than it was on Saturday. After much deliberation, we settled on having dinner at East Coast Food Centre. By the time we got there the place was already buzzing and we were unable to find a table. So we da bao-ed some sambal stingray, vege, rojak, sugar cane juice and chilli mollusc(?). We then strolled down to near one of the BBQ pits and opened up the various packages. I must say that it was a most enjoyable meal. I really enjoyed the food, the seabreeze and of course the company. We must do something like that again. Talk about turning lemons into lemonade.
  • The Jewel Box replied me! It took them sometime, but evenyually they sent me the much awaited e-mail.

"In respect to our recent teleconversation, we would like to invite you and your partner to join us for a complimentary meal at your convenient date and time. We appreciated your feedback and wish to assure you wehave taken the best efforts to improve. Kindly peruse the attached menu as recommended and as this is a seasonal menu, it will be subject to change when we alternate to a new season. "

Not bad at all....

  • Today, after work I went down to NUS to pick up my dearie. We then headed to the airport for Merry Brown's. As luck would have it they were renovating it and hence there was neither Merry, nor was there any Brown. So we had dinner at Burger King instead. I think the airport is a good place to people-watch and have good long chats. After dinner proper we took a 'short' walk over to the McDonald's at the other end of the terminal for some ice-cream. Then it was back to the set of wheels and then homeward bound.
  • On saturday Agnes bought me a pair of Levi's 508 jeans. It was supposed to be something in the way of a belated anniversary gift. Finally a pair of jeans that is not too tight!! Yippie!!
  • the automobile association sent me yet another form to submit for my membership. This time I am signing up for the 3 year plan. In fact I wonder why they do not just make you a new card once you renew your membership instead of having to submit an application and then receiving a letter to submit your photos and then waiting for your card to be sent to you. Shouldn't they like have a database of customer info and photographs? Or even like get you to do it online or come down personally to submit the forms and get the card made on the spot?
  • Another grouse is the damn bloody IT fair. Whether it is held at SUNTEC or at Singapore Expo it draws huge crowds. So why don't the organisers hold it as 2 different venues instead of one? Or even make it like a week long event, instead of the 3 days thing on weekends it is now. At least at the Singapore Expo the problem is merely huge crowds. But at SUNTEC City it literally brings the entire Marina Bay area to a virtual standstill. Marina Bay has a number of hotels, shopping centres and other such places. Unlike Orchard which is well served by buses and trains, Marina Bay's nearest MRT is at City Hall. So whenever an event of this scale is held at SUNTEC, all the carparks and roads are filled to the gills. And getting there via public transport is quite a hassle despite what the authorities may say on the issue.
  • Gotta get around to cleaning out the hamsters and rabbits cages. The rabbits really pee and poop alot. It is been barely a week and already their cages are a mess. At least with the hamsters I may even stretch cleaning sessions to 2 to 3 weeks apart. No such luck with rabbits though.
  • Went to Animal Resort at Seletar West today as I was doing my rounds in the area. My main intention was to look for some sort of ramp or platform for Scruffy's cage. I got around to looking at the animals there. i must say the rabbits colony there are really breeding like...ummm....rabbits. I saw at least 3 different litters of various ages in the pens there. I think the owners should be a bit more responsible in the breeding of the rabbits. But really, the little uns are sooooo cute...... *squeeze cheeks*
  • I need to cut my finger and toes nails pronto.

Shutdown Day

24th of March is Shutdown Day. A day when all of us will attempt to not use our computers or access the internet for a whole day (24 hours). We have grown so dependent on our machines, would life be the same without them. let us all try to see if we can all go a day without our computers. A good excuse not to do any work at the office. :D

As of this writing,

The Lorong of Broken Dreams

Yesterday, we brought the bunnies to the vet. It was under the pretense of Muffy's medical review. I took some time off from work. The main problem was the timing of their opening hours (2pm to 4.30pm & 6.30 to 8.30pm). So by the time I picked Agnes up from school it was too late for the former and too early for the latter. We stopped by Thomson Plaza for Ya Kun as Agnes was feeling rather peckish. Then we headed back to my place to rest for a bit, and prepare the rabbits for their appointment. We got to Mt Pleasant just past 6. We registered Muffy and even chatted with a nice lady who had brought her geriartric canine to the vet. Finally it was the Muffsters turn. Muffy got a clean bill of health. So he is now officially off his medications and special diet. Scruffy also got himself(or rather 'herself') checked out for its curious ear condition wherein Scruff's left ear is always found in a gravitationally challenged state. The vet found nothing actually wrong with Scruffy and his condition may be just due to laziness or some quirk. We also attempted to get them both sexed conclusively. Tentatively Muffy is a boy and Scruffy is a female. But that is not quite cast in stone yet.

After sending the bunnies home after the vets, we drove to bedok to meet Agnes's folks. They were going to Perak yet again. This time there was a spare tyre in the form of the 'auntie'. I found it amusing the stuff she brought with her for this trip. I do hope things go smoothly for them. After sending off the folks, we had dinner at Thien Kee Steamboat.

Today was mostly a shopping day. We were on the lookout for a pair of slippers for Agnes, and a pair of jeans and Nike shoes for me. We did manage to find the slippers and jeans after some ado. The shoes will have to wait until next time. Had dinner at Kenny Rogers. Today was also the IT and Computer fair at SUNTEC. There was also a myriad of travel fairs going o concurrently. Needless to say The Marina Bay was packed to the gills. We ended up parked at the Esplanade, which was just about the only place one could find parking in the vicinity. Our search was mainly in the SUNTEC and Marina Square areas, but ended up in the CityLink for Agnes's slippers. By the time we reached the Esplanade it was already past 4 pm so we missed out on the TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) meet-and-greet. After dinner we headed back to the car and went back to my house. We fed the bunnies and observed them for a bit, then it was back to my room for a short nap until it was time to send Agnes home. *frown*

Been thinking about...

.... whether it is wise to resign and start my own business. And how things will be. And how to come up with the funds to make my future shop viable.

....... whether to go church tomorrow. knowing the IT fair is on it is gonna be really crowded to park and move around. Butthen there is always public transport.

..... wonder how much performance bonus I will get this month. I normally get a full month...

...... then there is the installment of annual bonus in July. Which I will not be entitled if I resign in June as planned.

....... driving up to Perak. Gonna be a challenge I will relish. It is certainly gonna be more taxing than the KL and Pahang trips I been doing thus far.

......... saw some really cute bunnies at Pet Village just now.

....... how short SMS form words creep into our written word. =hw shrt SMS fm crp in2 ur wrttn word :P

..... a post about places I wanna go. Inspired by Agnes's question about my 'Dream place to visit'.

.... how it is gonna be at the office with Wong Chee keong and Sin gone. And Hasli back, and wang joining us in April. And me by my lonesome holding the fort until the 2 newbies learn the ropes. A problem excaberated by the fact that I have in-camp traing from the 10th to 20th of April. how?? how? how???

....... being like a lovesick puppy when Agnes is not around.

...... to download upload the pictures I took at the River Hong Bao, especially the fireworks display. Took loads of them.

Movie Review of 300

It is one of those films you will remember for quite some time. It plays out like of those Greek tragedies. You know how it is gonna end, but still you go along for the roller coaster ride. The battle scenes are visceral and explicit. There is also the sub plot of politics in the Spartan council and how the dutiful queen tries to overcome prejudice and corruption to get the required reinforcements sent to help her husband and his band of 300 men(hence the title) in their battle against the overwhelming numbers of the combined Persian army numbering...millions!! The cast had to undergo 6 months of intensive physical training to get into shape for their parts, and it shows. They look absolutely buff and look as though they were carved out of stone.
I know a certain someone enjoyed ogling at all the semi-naked male bodies (and there is some nippleage for the guys too!).

RATING: 4 loincloths out of 5, what else??? :P

The song in my head lately is Listen by Beyonce from the Dreamgirls OST. Somehow the lyrics strike a chord with me. And one can really feel Miss Knowles emotions coming through in the vocals.

Listen,
To the song here in my heart
A melody I've start
But can't complete

Listen, to the sound from deep within
It's only beginning
To find release

Oh,
the time has come
for my dreams to be heard
They will not be pushed aside and turned
Into your own
all cause you won't
Listen....

[Chorus]
Listen,
I am alone at a crossroads
I'm not at home, in my own home
And I tried and tried
To say whats on my mind
You should have known
Oh,
Now I'm done believin you
You don't know what I'm feelin
I'm more than what, you made of me
I followed the voice
you gave to me
But now I gotta find, my own..

You should have listened
There is someone here inside
Someone I'd thought had died
Sooo long ago

Ohh I'm free now and my dreams to be heard
They will not be pushed aside on words
Into your arms
All cause you won't
Listen...

[Chorus]

I don't know where I belong
But i'll be movin on
If you don't....
If you won't....

LISTEN!!!...
To the song here in my heart
A melody I've start
But I will complete

Oh,
Now i'm done believin you
You dont know what I'm feelin
I'm more than what, you made of me
I followed the voice, you think you gave to me
But now I gotta find, my own..
my own...
